Vegetarian Diets and Weight Loss

A Two-Year Randomized Weight Loss Trial Comparing a Vegan Diet to a More Moderate Low-Fat Diet

Format: file

This article compares two diets for weight loss and weight loss maintenance: a vegan diet and a National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) diet. Sixty-two postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to either diet and then either placed in a group that had group support meetings or no follow-up support. Weight and diet adherence were measured at one and two years for all participants. Those on the vegan diet lost more weight at years one and two. Those who received support did better in both groups.
